Far infrared pedestrian detection and tracking for night driving

6 This paper presents a module for pedestrian detection from a 7 moving vehicle in low-light conditions. The algorithm make 8 use of a single far infrared camera based on a microbolometer. 9 Images of the area ahead of the vehicle are analyzed 10 to determine if any pedestrian might be in its trajectory. 11 Detection is achieved by searching for distributions of 12 temperatures in the scene similar to that of the human 13 body. Those areas with an appropriate temperature, size, 14 and position in the image are classified, by means of a 15 correlation between them and some probabilistic models, 16 which represents the average temperature of the different 17 parts of the human body. Finally, those pedestrians found 18 are tracked in a subsequent step, using an unscented Kalman 19 filter. This final stage of the algorithm enables the algorithm 20 to predict the trajectory of the pedestrian, in a way that does 21 not depend on the movement of the camera. The aim of this 22 system is to warn the vehicle’s driver and reduce the reaction 23 time in case an emergency break is necessary. 24
